News-Gazette Honors -2009 The 32nd News-Gazette All-Area Volleyball teams were announced on November 18, 2009. Central volleyball banquet was held on Thursday, Nov. 12. Attendance and food were excellent. Thanks to Jeff and Paula for organizing the banquet. Each of the coaches reviewed the year and presented awards. Central Bows Out in Sectional The Maroons season came to an end in the semifinals of the Sectionals at Lincoln on Nov.3, 2009. Central had a rough first set losing to Chatham-Glenwood, 8-25, but came back to be competitive staying close most of the second set before fading at the end and losing 18-25. The Maroons ended with a winning season falling just short of 20 wins. Thanks to all the Lady Maroons for a great season. Best of luck to the seniors, Maeve, Mariah, and Katie. To all others, have a great off-season and come back ready to make 2010 an even better season. Regional Champs!!! The Maroons brought home the Regional championship trophy for the first time in 6 years on October 31, 2009. Central withstood an early onslaught and a spectacular late rally by the Mahomet Bulldogs in the Regional finals at Rantoul. In the first set, the Maroons were out of synch and fell 10-25, before rebounding in the second set leading comfortably for most of the set until winning 25-19. It looked like more of the same in the third set with Central taking a small lead mid set and pushing it out to 24-17. While the Maroons were waiting to celebrate, Mahomet rallied dramatically to a 24-24 tie before the Maroons pulled it out 26-24. The Varsity finished 6th at the Mt. Pulaski Invitational tournament on Oct. 24. The Maroons lost their 3 games in pool play to: Il Central 18-25, 19-25,O'Fallon 21-25, 18-25, and Edwards Co. 25-27, 22-25. They won in the consolation bracket against Olympia 25-22, 25-22, beore losing in three, 25-20, 25-27, 19-25 to Il Central to finish 6th. Maroon Swept by Bloomington The Maroons varsity lost in two on Senior night on October 22, 2009 to Bloomington at Combes Gym, 8-25, 14-25. Central bid farewell to seniors, Mariah Thomas, Maeve Aquino, and Katie Donnelly. Thanks for the good times to the seniors and best of luck. The JV lost in three, 13-25, 25-23, 10-15, as did the Freshman, 25-19, 16-25, 5-15. Maroons Lose at Urbana, Frosh Win The varsity lost in two at Urbana on October 20, 2009. The Maroons never challenged the Tigers and lost 15-25, 19-25. The JV won the middle set, but dropped the match in 3, 15-25, 25-22, 19-25. The Freshman continued their winning ways, 27-25, 25-19. Maroons Sweep Decatur MacArthur The varsity and JV won in two sets each at Decatur MacArthur on October 15, 2009. The varsity won 25-15, 25-14 and the JV won 25-21, 25-15. The Frosh also won in two, handily in the first 25-12 and hanging on in the second 27-25. Better Tues in Danville The Maroons swept the Vikings in Danville on October 13. The Varsity staggered out of the gate to lose the first set 16-25, then won easily in the second, 25-10, and took a huge lead in the third only to have Danville come back to take a 21-20 lead before the Maroons pulled it out 25-23. The JV also took three sets to win 25-13, 19-25, 15-11 while the Frosh won in two 25-19, 26-24. Blue Monday in St. Joe The Maroons came out the gate in good shape at St. Joe on October 12 winning the first set 25-17, but faltered in the second set to lose 12-25 and fell short in the third 19-25. The JV bowed in two close games, 21-25, 22-25, while the Freshman split a pair 25-18, 18-25 and by rule did not play a third game. Varsity, JV lose, Frosh Win at Chatham The lost in two to Chatham-Glenwood at Chatham on October 8, 2009 by scores of 23-25, 12-25. The JV started strong with a 25-13 win, but lost the final two 17-25, 12-15. The Freshman were the bright spot winning in two 25-17, 25-18. Central Loses to Mattoon The Central Varsity lost in 2 sets to Mattoon at Combes Gym on Oct. 6, 2009. The Maroons fell behind at the beginning of the first set and never recovered, losing 17-25. They took an early lead in the second and played even through most of the set before losing 20-25. The JV also lost in two 23-25 and 20-25 while the freshman started strong with a 25-9 win, but lost the final two agonizingly close sets, 24-26 and 14-16. Maroons 4th at Centennial JV Tournament The JV's took their first two matches against St. Joe, 25-22, 15-25, 15-12, and Lincoln, 25-15, 25-23 and lost to Centennial 17-25, 22-25 at the Centennial JV Tournament on October 3, 2009. Wrapped around the Centennial game were two heartbreaking losses to Bloomington Central Catholic, 28-26, 26-28, 11-15 and 22-25, 25-20, 18-20. The Maroons had great chances to win both matches but didn't quite get the job done and finished 4th overall in the tournament. Maroons lose to Normal Comm. The Varsity lost in two sets to Normal Community at Combes gym on October 1, 2009. The Maroons never got untracked losing 9-25, 16-25. The JV also lost in 2, 16-25, 21-25, while the Freshman took Normal Comm. to three sets, 18-25, 25-22 in the first two, and led at the 10-point mark in the third before falling 13-15. V, JV Fall to Normal West, F win The Varsity lost in two games to Normal West at Combes Gym on September 29. The Maroons couldn't get untracked in either set falling behind early before playing even the rest of the sets losing 17-25, 19-25. The JV also lost in two 14-25, 23-25. The Frosh continued their good play coming back to win in three, 13-25, 25-20, 15-13 Varsity loses at Charleston The varsity lost at Charleston on Sept. 28 in two sets 18-25 in the first set, before a heartbreaker in the second, 29-31. The JV lost in two while the Frosh won in two. Champions in Decatur The
Maroons varsity took home the championship trophy for the Charlie
Scanavino Volleyball Invitational in Decatur on Sept. 26, 2009 with a
5-0 record (photo). The Maroons beat Warrensburg-Latham in a tense 3-set
championship match. Neither team was able to get separation through the
whole match, resulting in 3 2-point sets with the Maroons coming out on
top, 26-24, 23-25, 25-23. In pool play, the Maroons beat Sangamon Valley 25-20, 25-17, Mattoon (winner this year over perennial Big 12 power Bloomington) 25-22, 20-25, 15-6, and Meridian 25-23, 25-18. In the semis of the championship bracket, the Maroons beat Decatur MacArthur 25-18, 25-18. Esther Kemper and Mariah Thomas were selected to the all-tournament team. Congratulations to Esther and Mariah and to the whole team for a great effort. Central Edge up to 9 The
Maroons edged up one notch to #9 in the 9/24 News-Gazette rankings of area
teams. Urbana moved up one place to #8 and Centennial remained #1. Maroons Fall to Chargers The Maroons fell in two to one of the best teams in the state, Centennial, by scores of 7-25, 15-25. The Freshman and JV put up a good battle but also lost in two, 23-25, 16-25 for the JV and 22-25, 18-25 for the Freshman. This was the first loss for the Freshman who fell to 4-1. Maroons Sweep Sages The Maroons V, JV, and Frosh each won in two games at Monticello on 9/14/09. The Frosh won 15-6, 15-6 in 15 point games as per the Monticello league rules, the JV won 25-18, 25-13, and the Varsity gained momentum with scores of 25-23, 25-10. Maroons take 3rd at Bulldog Invite The Maroons made it into the 4-team Championship bracket at the Mahomet Bulldog Invite on Sept. 12 by finishing first in their pool. The Maroons began with victories over Rantoul and Pleasant Plains. The victory over Rantoul turned out to be critical when Central lost in the third match to Wilmington. Both Rantoul and Central finished 2-1 in pool play but Central was first by virtue of winning the head to head meeting. In the semis of the Championship, the Maroons fell to a strong offense by TriValley before rebounding to win in three sets against Lexington in the third-place game. See Schedule and Results for scores. Alex Pelmore was selected for the All-tournament Team. Congratulations Alex. The Maroons Varsity, JV, and Frosh all won in 2 sets at Decatur Eisenhower on September 10, 2009. The freshman won 25-9, 25-9, JV 25-3, 25-13, and the Varsity, 25-18, 25-16. Varsity Bronze Bracket Champ The Maroons won the bronze bracket championship and trophy at the Centennial Tournament on 9/5/09 and finished 9th overall in the 16-team field. The Maroons woke up in time to beat Clinton in the first 8am match at the Centennial Tournament. After dropping the first set 10-25, they came back to win 25-23, 15-11. The Maroons lost in two close sets to Bloom Township in their second match, 21-25, 23-25. The Maroons fell way behind early in two sets against Peoria Dunlop and strong comebacks were not enough with finals of 15-25, 24-26. The Maroons in a rematch of a match earlier in the week with Mahomet won in their 4th match in the tournament, 28-26, 25-22. The varsity finished strong with a two-set victory over Rochester in the championship game of the bronze bracket. Scores were 25-23, 25-22. JV Take Second Place at Central Tournament The JV dropped a close match to Urbana in the championship game of the Central JV tournament on 9/5/2009 at Combs gym, 23-25, 22-25. In earlier games, the JV Maroons defeated Rantoul 25-21, 25-16, and PBL in three sets, 22-25, 25-23, 15-11. Varsity, Frosh win at Mahomet The Maroons opened with a strong effort in a 2-set win on Sept. 3 over Mahomet, 25-23 and 25-18. The Frosh recovered from a slow start to win in 3, 12-25, 25-19, 15-5, while the JV fell in two, 17-25, 19-25. activities, t-shirt order, volleyball sponsor, and player information
form. The last form (player information) is the most crucial piece of
information at this time. This form asks for player and parent contact
information and a checklist of items that your player would like
additional information about. Coach Anderson asked for these to be
returned last night or as soon as possible. She will be sending out
information via email based on that information form. If you were not
able to return this form last night, please return this form either in
person to the Athletic Office or via fax to Kristine Anderson at
