Maroons roll in openerCentral Volleyball opened the 2008 season with a solid 25-15, 25-16 victory over Mahomet-Seymour Sept. 4 at Combes Gym. In the preseason News-Gazette regional rankings Mahomet-Seymour was ranked 6th and Central was 9th. The Maroon JV team won a hard-fought match in three sets with Mahomet-Seymour; 25-22, 22-25, 15-7JV team 3rd in Central JV tournament In a strong field of 8, the Central JV team finished in 3rd place in the Champaign Central JV tournament at Combes Gym on Sept. 6. The Maroons beat Rantoul in two games, 21-12, 21-11; lost to Pontiac, 17-21, 16- 21; and beat St. Joe-Ogden in a nailbiter, 26-24, 20-22, 15-7. St. Thomas More finished first and Pontiac was second. Other teams participating were Mahomet, Urbana, and Paxton. Congratulations to Ellen Moe who was selected for the all-tournament team.Central V and JV Win in TwoChampaign

Central won two matches and finished ninth at the 2008 Mahomet-Seymour
Bulldog Volleyball Invitational at Mahomet-Seymour High School on Sept.
13. The Maroons beat Fithian-Oakwood and Urbana in two games and lost
to Charleston and St. Joe-Ogden in three games and to Wilmington in
two. The Charleston game turned out to be the game for second place in
their initial pool and featured an exciting 15-point third game tie
breaker . Down 14-11, the Maroons fought back to 14-14, and won points
to tie at 15 and 16, before going ahead 17-16, but then lost 3 straight
points and the game 19-17. Maroons sweep MonticelloChampaign Central Maroons made it a clean sweep against Monticello on September 15, 2008 at Combes Gym. The varsity played solid volleyball in a two game win, 25-12, 25-9. The JV and Freshman teams had more of a struggle in three game matches with the JV winning 25-19, 19-25, and 15-13 and the Freshman 24-26, 25-21, and 15-10.Maroons win 3 of 4 at BBCHS Challenge At
the Bradley-Bourbonnais Comm. High School Challenge on Sept. 20, the
Maroons lost their first match to host BBCHS, 19-25, 24-26, but won
their final three matches against Streator, 25-19, 25-19, Herscher,
25-14, 25-14, and Beecher, 25-7, 25-18. Maroons lose at Centennial Central ran into a buzzsaw at Centenial on Tues., Sept. 23. Central hung tough in the first game with some strong defense, including a couple of spectacular saves, but it was not enough and the Maroons fell in two 25-16, 25-11. The JV started strong with a 25-23 win in their first game, but fell 12-25 and 10-15 in the following two games. The Freshman lost in two, 17-25, 15-25. Maroons 4th at Eisenhower Invitational The
Central varsity took home the fourth place trophy at the Charlie
Scanavino Invitational at Decatur Eisenhower on Saturday, Sept. 27.
The Maroons lost the first game with Warrensburg-Lathem, 11-25, 14-25.
but came back to defeat Eisenhower, 25-14, 25-15 and Meridan, 25-22,
25-18 to go into the championship bracket. The Maroons lost a tough 3
set match to Mattoon, 13-25, 25-23, 10-15 and then lost in the 3rd
place game to Athens, 26-28, 14-25. The Maroons are 10-8 on the season. Maroons Sweep Charleston The
Maroons swept 3 matches from Charleston at Combes Gym on September 29.
The varsity won easily 25-10, 25-17 against a team that had beat them
in 3 games at the Mahomet tournament 2 weeks earlier. The JV won in two games also 25-16, 27-25, while the Freshman
required 3 games, 24-26, 25-21, 15-10. against Charleston. A Tough Week in Normal The Maroons traveled to Normal twice the week of Sept. 29 and dropped matches to Normal
West on Sept. 30 and to Normal Community on Oct. 2. The varsity lost
19-25, 23-25 to West and 13-25, 13-25 to Community. Normal Community
and Centennial will likely battle for the Big 12 crown. The JV and
Freshman also dropped their matches. Maroons JV 5th at Centennial Tournament The
JV team competed in the Centennial tournament on Oct. 4 and finished
5th. The Maroons lost to St. Joe, and Effingham and won games against
Bloomingon Central Catholic, Mahomet, and Effingham in a second match. V and JV Lose at Mattoon, but Frosh Win The Maroons varsity lost at Mattoon in
a three game match for the second time this year 25-20, 20-25, 14-25. The JV also lost.
The Freshman were a bright spot, winning a close 30-28 first game and
25-19 in the second. JV Wins, V and Fr fall to Chatham-Glenwood, The
Maroons varsity lost in three to Chatham-Glenwood on Oct 9 at Combes
Gym. The Maroons withstood a furious barrage by Chatham's All-American
OH/Setter in the first game falling behind 1-8 before rallying to an
exciting 28-26 win, but couldn't sustain the effort falling in the next
two games 12-25, 13-25. The Freshman also lost in three, 25-27, 25-23,
11-15 while the JV fared much better with a convincing two game win
25-15, 25-14. Varsity Defeats St. Joe The
Maroons varsity defeated St. Joe on Oct. 13 at Combes Gym in two games,
25-16, 25-23. The JV lost in three, 17-25, 25-14, 12-15 and the Freshman lost
12-25, 17-25. Maroons take Danville The
Maroons took all three matches with Danville at Combes Gym on Oct. 14.
The varsity won in 2, 25-23, 25-17, as did the JV, 25-5, 25-20. The
Freshman had to work harder, coming back from a first game loss to win
in 3, 22-25, 25-12, 15-12. Maroons Win 3 Against Decatur MacArthur The
Maroons
varsity ran their record to 14-12, 3-4 in the Big 12, with a relatively
easy 25-8, 25-8 victory over Decatur MacArthur at Combes Gym on October
16. The JV also won in 2 games, 25-12, 25-19 while the Freshman took 3
games to win 25-20, 17-25, 15-9. Maroons take a broom to Tigers
The
Maroons swept their matches with the Urbana Tigers in their final
regular season home game Oct. 21 at Combes Gym on senior night. The
Varsity won 25-23, 25-12 behind seniors, Shelby Strang and Andrea
Miskimins, playing their final regular season game at Combes. The
JV followed suit with a 25-18, 25-14 victory as did the Freshman,
25-11, 25-17 to complete the sweep.
Maroons fall to Bloomington; JV wins
The
Maroons fell on October 23 to Bloomington at Bloomington, 16-25,
17-25. The Maroons finished with a league record of 4-5. The JV team was
victorious in 3 games, 25-23, 21-25, 15-8. The Freshman team lost in two, 23-25, 19-25.
Mt Pulaski Tournament,Tough Times
The Maroons had a long Saturday on Oct. 5 with four losses and a forfeit win at the Mt. Pulaski Tournament.
Central in Regional Championship Game
Central
beat Mahomet in two games 25-16, 25-22 and advanced to the championship
game with Centennial. on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7:00 P.M.. Maroons Bow Out Against Chargers Many Thanks for a Great Season The
Maroons 2008 season came to an end on Nov. 1 in a loss to Centennial.
Thanks to the seniors, Andy and Shelby, and all the players, Becky,
Nancy, and Paula, Missy Kaiser and Kathy Aquino for leading the
Boosters, and to all the parents for making it a great season. |
